Carbon fiber surface treatment technology

Carbon fiber is widely used in aerospace, automobile manufacturing, sporting goods and other fields due to its excellent mechanical properties and lightweight characteristics. However, in order to improve the bonding strength between carbon fiber and matrix material, it is usually necessary to treat the surface of carbon fiber. The following are several common carbon fiber surface treatment technologies:

1. Oxidation treatment

Oxidation treatment is to generate oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of carbon fiber by chemical or electrochemical methods, thereby improving its surface activity. Common oxidation treatment methods include liquid phase oxidation, gas phase oxidation and electrochemical oxidation.

- Liquid phase oxidation: Using oxidizing solutions (such as nitric acid, phosphoric acid, etc.) to treat carbon fiber can increase the roughness of the fiber surface and the content of oxygen-containing functional groups.

- Gas phase oxidation: Using oxidizing gases such as air and oxygen to treat carbon fiber at high temperature can generate more oxygen-containing functional groups and improve the surface activity of the fiber.

- Electrochemical oxidation: The oxide layer is generated on the surface of carbon fiber by electrochemical methods. This method is easy to control and causes less damage to the fiber.

2. Plasma treatment

Plasma treatment is to modify the surface of carbon fiber using active particles in plasma. This method can introduce various functional groups on the fiber surface to improve its bonding strength with the matrix material. Commonly used plasmas include air, oxygen, nitrogen, etc.

3. Irradiation treatment

Irradiation treatment is to increase the surface roughness and the content of oxygen-containing functional groups by exposing carbon fiber to gamma rays or laser rays. This method can significantly improve the bonding strength between carbon fiber and matrix material.

4. Coating treatment

Coating treatment is to apply a functional coating on the surface of carbon fiber to improve its bonding strength with matrix material. Common coating materials include epoxy resin, polyurethane, etc.

5. Surface cleaning treatment

Surface cleaning treatment is to remove impurities and contaminants on the surface of carbon fiber and improve its bonding strength with matrix material. Common methods include high temperature heating, solvent cleaning, etc.

Conclusion

Carbon fiber surface treatment technology plays an important role in improving the performance of carbon fiber reinforced composites. By selecting a suitable surface treatment method, the bonding strength between carbon fiber and matrix material can be significantly improved, thereby improving the overall performance of composite materials. Different surface treatment methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the appropriate method should be selected according to specific application requirements.
