Excellent properties of UHMWPE fiber
UHMWPE fiber has many excellent properties, such as excellent mechanical properties, excellent impact resistance, excellent abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, excellent light resistance, etc.
1. Excellent mechanical properties of UHMWPE fiber.
UHMWPE fibers have excellent mechanical properties. Under the same linear density, the tensile strength of UHMWPE fiber is 15 times that of steel wire rope. It is 40% higher than aramid fiber, one of the world's three major high-tech fibers, and 10 times higher than high-quality steel fiber and ordinary chemical fiber. Compared with steel, E-glass, nylon, polyamine, carbon fiber, and boron fiber, its strength and modulus are higher than these fibers, and it is the highest strength of the same quality material.
2. Excellent impact resistance of UHMWPE fiber
UHMWPE fibers have excellent impact resistance. Its ability of absorbing energy and impact resistance during deformation and molding is higher than that of aramid and carbon fibers, which are also "the world's three major high-tech fibers". UHMWPE fibers have higher total energy absorption than impact compared to polyamide, aramid, E-glass, carbon and aramid fibers.
3. UHMWPE fiber has excellent wear resistance
In general, the higher the modulus of the material, the lower the abrasion resistance, but for UHMWPE fibers, the opposite is true. Because of the lower coefficient of friction of UHMWPE fibers, the higher the modulus, the higher the wear resistance. Comparing the friction coefficients of UHMWPE fibers with carbon fibers and aramid fibers, the wear resistance and bending fatigue properties of UHMWPE fibers are much higher than those of carbon fibers and aramid fibers. Therefore, its abrasion resistance is superior to other high-performance fibers. Due to its excellent abrasion and bending resistance, it also has superior processing properties and is easily made into other composite materials and fabrics.

4. Chemical resistance of UHMWPE fiber
The chemical structure of UHMWPE fiber is relatively simple and its chemical properties are relatively stable. Moreover, it has a high crystal structure orientation, which makes it less susceptible to active gene attack in strong acid and alkali, and can maintain its original chemical properties and structure. Therefore, it is not easily corroded by most chemicals. Only a few organic solutions can make it slightly swollen, and its mechanical property loss is less than 10%. The strength retention rates of UHMWPE fibers and aramid fibers in different chemical media were compared. The corrosion resistance of UHMWPE fiber is significantly higher than that of aramid fiber. Particularly stable in acids, bases and salts, its strength is only lost in sodium hypochlorite solution.
5. Excellent light resistance of UHMWPE fiber
Due to the stable chemical structure of UHMWPE fiber, its light resistance is also the best among high-tech fibers. Aramid fibers are not UV resistant and should only be used out of direct sunlight. Compared with nylon, high-modulus and low-modulus aramid, UHMWPE fiber has a significantly higher strength retention rate than other fibers.
6. Other properties of UHMWPE fiber
UHMWPE fibers also have good hydrophobicity, water and moisture resistance, electrical insulation and long tortuous life. It is the only high-tech fiber that can float on water, and an ideal low-temperature material.
But it also has its disadvantage, that is, the low melting point. The temperature during processing should not exceed 130 °C, otherwise the creep phenomenon will occur due to the weak force between the molecular chains of the UHMWPE fiber and shorten the service life. There are no dye groups on UHMWPE fibers, making them less wettable. It is difficult for the dye to penetrate into the fiber, resulting in poor dyeing properties. These shortcomings affect its scope of application.
