Demand for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber continues to rise, and the industry is developing rapidly.
#PEG# Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber refers to polyethylene fiber with a molecular weight of 1 million or more. It is a high-tech fiber that offers advantages such as high strength, lightweight, high modulus, bullet resistance, seawater resistance, puncture resistance, low-temperature resistance, and UV resistance. It is primarily used in defense, aerospace, marine fisheries, security protection, engineering and construction, and other fields.
In terms of projected demand for UHMWPE fiber, in 2019, my country's military industry had the highest demand for UHMWPE fiber, accounting for approximately 26%; followed by the marine industry, accounting for approximately 25%; and the security protection sector ranked third, accounting for approximately 20%.
UHMWPE was first prepared and produced by United Chemical Company in the United States. Subsequently, DSM of the Netherlands applied for the first patent for UHMWPE and subsequently built a UHMWPE production facility, achieving industrial production. my country achieved industrial production of UHMWPE in 1999. In 2019, my country's UHMWPE production exceeded 10,000 tons, making it a major global UHMWPE producer. In 2019, my country's UHMWPE fiber production capacity reached approximately 44,000 tons, accounting for approximately 55% of the global total.
For UHMWPE production, the main production processes currently include dry and wet processes. The dry process uses decalin as a solvent, features a short production process, is environmentally friendly, and produces high overall product performance. Representative companies include DSM, Toyobo, and Yizheng Chemical Fiber. The wet process uses mineral oil and white oil as raw materials, resulting in a relatively long production process and a high solvent content. Major manufacturers include Honeywell, Ningbo Dacheng, and Shanghai Sirui.
According to the "2020-2024 China Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber Industry Market Supply and Demand Survey and Consulting Report" released by the Xinshijie Industry Research Center, in the past two years, global conflicts have intensified, national security awareness has increased, and defense equipment investment has increased. The output of military equipment and security protection has continued to rise, which will drive continued growth in the UHMWPE fiber market. Global demand for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber is expected to reach approximately 150,000 tons in 2025.
In terms of market competition, Honeywell and DSM maintain their technological advantages in the global market and hold a high market share in the high-end UHMWPE fiber market. Approximately 23 Chinese companies have invested in UHMWPE fiber, with companies such as Jiujiujiu Technology, Yizheng Petrochemical, Uni-President Zhongxin Materials, and Millennium Dragon Fiber boasting significant production. In terms of imports and exports, my country still relies on imports for a small amount of UHMWPE fiber, but overall, domestic UHMWPE fiber exports are high, making it a net exporter of UHMWPE fiber.
Analysts indicate that UHMWPE fiber is primarily used in military, security, aerospace, and other fields. With the growth of my country's defense spending and the development of high-end aviation, market demand for UHMWPE fiber continues to rise, leading to rapid industry development. In terms of production, my country is a major UHMWPE fiber producer, accounting for approximately half of the global total. In addition to meeting domestic demand, products can also be exported to overseas markets, contributing to the industry's overall prosperity.
